Behind The Name

“He who created you, he who formed you; DO NOT be afraid, for I have REDEEMED you, I have summoned you by name. You are MINE. When you pass through the waters I will be with you”

Behind The Name

How amazing is it that you know you are called by name? That He sees you and loves you through it all?

My thoughts exactly, it is comforting to know that I have been forgiven, I have been called by name, and that I am his. What is even better is you are too! Being forgiven, redeemed, and called his isn’t just for me or for the pastor or the worship leader, it is for everyone who believes in Jesus and turns from their old way of life!

Jesus has left the 99 to follow you and bring you home my friend. That is why I found hope in the word Redeemed. Being redeemed is being forgiven my friend, it is totally and honestly being forgiven and made new from everything you have ever done and will do. Isaiah 43:1 says it perfectly!

Now hyssop is a type of plant that has many benefits. It can be made into a strong tea that is made from the leaves that are sweetened with honey, it is a remedy for nose, throat, and lung afflictions. It can be used to flavor meats, fish, veggies, and liqueurs. A type of honey can be made from hyssop pollen and is considered fine. the leaves of hyssop contain oil that is used in perfumes. However, most importantly hyssop was used in the bible as a physical and metaphorical way of cleansing one of something like sin. David asks if not pleads with God to “Cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow”. He isn’t asking to be physically cleansed but to be spiritually cleansed as he confesses his sin. Hyssop also appears at Jesus’s crucifixion when the roman soldier offered Jesus and drink of wine vinegar on a sponge at the end of a stalk of hyssop. If we go back even further to Exodus they use hyssop bunches to dip in the blood of sheep at Passover.

I know this all seems a little much but there is a connection there. Hyssop is beyond amazing.

For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of it’s power

1 Corinthians 1:17

Eloquent is a characteristic of speech or speakers notable for their effectiveness. Paul was called to merely preach the gospel to everyone not just jews not just gentiles but to everyone who was willing to hear and to do so with a pressing matter. We are made right because Jesus died for us on the cross. The good news is about the cross and what Jesus had done, and that we are forgiven and can live forever with God! Behind the name Redeemed Hyssop is to remind us that we are forgiven and can be cleansed from sin and from our old life. Our purpose in life is to spread the word of God and totally understand the words he left us. Our calling is to help brothers and sisters come to know the Jesus we know and show them the beauty of the God we know.
